Rain Report: Columbia Triathlon

Yesterday was my first ‘big’ triathlon of the season – the Columbia Triathlon – an Olympic distance event. Here is my lengthy rain – I mean race – report! They were predicting rain Saturday and Sunday with thunderstorms, too. They certainly got it right.

Saturday morning I met
Marlene for a latte at Caribou Coffee where we went on to meet Harriet at packet pick-up. Columbia requires athletes to rack their bikes the day before. So after pickup we headed to the race site for a short brick (30 minute ride then 15 minute run). I usually cover my seat and bike computer in bags but for the first time (per race director’s ‘suggestion’) I used old swim caps. They actually worked quite well! I know if it rained during the race my stuff would get wet but at least it would be protected the night before and until it was time to ride. Post-brick we had lunch at California Tortilla. Had never been there before but had a delicious small honey lime chicken burrito. Mmmmm. It was very good! And how nice that they have a 'small' option!

Saturday night the rain started. And the thunder. And it woke me up. More than once! Then 3:30 AM arrived and up I rose – it was race morning! My plan was to be out the door by 4:15 AM and I pretty much was. The icon on my computer said it was cloudy and that there was a 40% chance of rain in my area. Um, yeah. I opened the door to head out…and it was pouring! I took it slow on the way there as needed as there was water in the roadway and it was scary! I wished I had left at 4:00 AM instead! I managed to make it to the race site by 5:15 AM and by 5:25 AM I think I was parked…It took nearly 10 minutes to get into the park entrance and park because of traffic. Not too bad. Parking was interesting – I was in my Honda Accord and was directed to park facing uphill on a slick, grassy slope…I was afraid I wouldn’t make it! And then worried how hard it would be to leave later. (But actually leaving was not a problem…) Oh, it was STILL raining. Hard at times.

First order of business – body marking and tire pumping. Check. The body marker had a guy holding an umbrella for her but I still got rained on. The magic marker was not working all that well. Got the tires pumped then made the first visit to the port o potty. No lines! (The rain did keep some athletes away and some even picked up their bikes that morning and left.) Next I went back to the car to get the rest of my gear for transition. I had pre-packed each pair of shoes in bags to keep them dry, initially. I did not bother to lay out a towel this time. I did have a small hand towel in the bike shoe bag to clean my feet off after the walk/run from the swim exit. At this point I went over to see if Marlene and Harriet had made it and they had. Their bikes were racked near each other so we all got to visit. I almost forgot my sunglasses! If Harriet had not mentioned putting the clear lenses in her for the ride I would have completely forgotten and definitely would have missed them! So back to my bike to take care of that. Thanks, Harriet! Somewhere in there I made a second trip to the potties. Still a pretty short line!

At this point it was about 6:15 AM (I think). I decided to head to my car to dry out somewhat so I could get my wetsuit on. I was using my full sleeved suit. This plan worked pretty well. I put it on half way then started walking to the swim start barefoot. Ouch! (At times…) I had disposable flip flops but decided not to use them since it was so wet and slippery out. Once at the swim start I learned that the start was being delayed by 15 minutes. No problem….I got into the rest of the wetsuit and asked a fellow competitor in my wave to help zip me up. Then I in turn did the same for another person. They had the National Anthem and the first wave of professionals got in and finally the race was underway. About 10 or so minutes later it was finally time for my wave to get into the water, where I was able to pee once more, in my wetsuit no less. I think that is a sign of luck. 

Swim: 29:01, 31 – I think my open water swimming and sighting is really improving. I hardly had to make adjustments. Only occasionally to get out of the way of a slower swimmer...as I did not want to swim on top of them. I did have to adjust my goggles a few times when they took in water. Not my best swim split, but between my goggles and the full suit (which slows me down a little compared to sleeveless) I was happy. I like Centennial Lake in May – the water is not super clear but it does not taste funny at all. And I don’t think it has ever been really choppy.

T1: 5:27, 56 – Any time I am taking off a wetsuit I do not expect a fast transition. Oh well!

Bike: 1:39:03, 54, 15.4 mph – I can’t really remember if it was raining when I started the bike, but I was worried about slipping going up the hill and out of transition. I had just seen a guy fall on his way through transition from the swim! The mount line, I thought, was not clear. I finally decided to mount and was almost taken down by a guy riding up beside me. He was wobbling! Whew! Anyway, I think I later passed that guy, and then he passed me, back and forth a few times on the course. I do remember rain on the course though. I do remember the rain stopped, I just can’t remember when or where! So, I just figured I’d take it easy on the down hills so there would not be any mishaps. Despite the icky weather there were a lot of cheering folks out there, which was nice. It was a pretty uneventful ride, but I did enjoy the cows who probably thought we were crazy out there in that weather! I passed a dead skunk on the side of the road. Ewww. On the way back a
Team Z guy passed me and then a short while later I saw both Marlene and Harriet out on the course. They were in a swim wave about an hour after me! All in all it was a nice ride. I’m still a sucky climber, but I will strive to make some improvements this season. And future seasons! It was a better split than last year, even with the weather.

T2: 2:45, 37 – This was better than T1, but wow, could have been faster!

Run: 1:06:21, 52, 10:41 pace – The first mile and a half went pretty well. I managed to jog up the first awful hill, the switchback thing. I probably went a bit too fast because the hills got harder. Oh well. I let myself walk and tried not to feel bad about it. I took Gatorade from most of the stations because that seemed to help. I saw Julie from Team Z at the
DC Tri Club water stop! (She is also a DC Tri member!) She handed me my drink on the way back! I saw a few Z-ers out there, too. I managed to run the last mile and a half, too! It must have just been the middle three-ish miles that were the worst! All in all I was happy with my split as it was also better than last year!

Final: 3:33:35, 47 out of 78 finishers – Again, my finish time was better than last year so I’m happy that with a rainy bike I was able to improve there. I will most likely sign up again and challenge myself to improve!

Post race I got a little bit of food and chatted with a new-ish Team Z person before heading back to Transition for my gear. I managed to stuff everything into my bag and prop that on my handlebars to get out. I was surprised to see a biker come into T2 when I was heading out. I made it up to my car with no problem and got stuff loaded. I was able to change and while I wanted to go back to the finish to see Marlene and Harriet part of me just wanted to get going. I think the stress of driving in the rain and the pre-race rain wore me out! Not to mention the disruptions to my sleep due to the thunderstorms. On the ride home I had my post-race Snickers and Diet Coke! I was still hungry when I got home and had a little left over pasta then took a shower and a much needed nap. Of course a few hours later I was hungry. Again.

Next up:
Zooma Annapolis 10K. This is a nice hilly event. I can’t wait! The course map is finally up and I see that it drops 10 feet below sea level and goes as high as 62 feet above. I think if I practice the Regina hills (112 feet in 1/8 mile) a couple more times I should be OK! The cool thing about this race is that is starts and finishes at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. How cool is that?

Happy Training!

Double brick and…a hash run?

This weekend I did something different. I did brick workouts on both days! I missed a bike ride on Thursday because I really wanted to attend the Patriot District Outdoor Track and Field Meet. My son was not running, though he did go as a 4x800 relay alternate. Anyway, it was to be a tough competition between four of the eight teams attending – my son’s school included. Well, his team won by 26 points! And the relay (that my son did not run in) not only won they broke the meet record of 8:02 with a time of 7:55! Here are the results:

Men - Team Rankings - 17 Events Scored

1) Annandale 124
2) Lake Braddock 98
3) Woodson, W. T. 88
4) Williams, T. C. 84
5) South County 48
6) West Potomac 39
7) R. E. Lee 35
8) West Springfield 11

There was a very exciting and close race in the boys 1600 – the top two times were 4:18.19 and 4:18.28! Plus, the top seven finishers all qualified for states as they came in under 4:23.09 – the qualifying time. Wow!

So…back to my weekend update. I did not bike Thursday and knew I needed to make it up on the weekend. I’d planned to go to Prince William Forest Park on Sunday, but Carol twisted my arm(!) because she and Pam were going to be there on Saturday to do about 25-ish miles/three loops, followed by a 30 minute run. I decided to make that my brick. Friday I planned to run about 6 miles after work, but I was not really feeling ‘it’. (And it rained...and hailed out!) So I just did not do it. So I decided after my shorter Sunday bike ride I would do another short run.

Saturday we met at 9AM and got our stuff organized and we were off. Carol had a planned workout, too! We biked about 2.5 miles (warm-up) to the ‘start’ of the loop where we proceeded to do the following: 2x 8 minutes hard, 3 minutes easy; 12 minutes hard, 2 minutes easy; 2x 20 minutes hard, 2 minutes easy (or something like that). Then the remainder back to the parking lot would continue to be cool down. This worked out about perfect because as we were close to finishing the 3rd loop where we can go back to the ‘start’ or turn we finished the second 20 minute session and turned to head back to the lot.

Back in the lot we regrouped and went for our 30 minute run. This run was to be the first 15 minutes at long run pace and the second 15 minutes at marathon pace. This time I actually managed to run (though very slowly) up this one hill that I walked the past two times I tried. Yay for me! I fell back at this point but caught them around the 15 minute point when they took a short walk break. We ran a total of about 2.75 miles. What a great workout. Thanks again, Carol and Pam!

Sunday morning I had some errands to run so I did not get started till Noon! Good thing it was not super hot out. I planned to ride this nice loop of about 13.5 miles from my front door. For a change of pace I used my old Cannondale road bike. I wanted to see how much difference using a triple went. It turns out not much. But who knows if I’d ridden ‘fresh’ (i.e., not having ridden hills and hard the day before)? Anyway, all went well on my ride! I even got to see and hear a fighter jet of some kind (my guess was an F-15) fly overhead when I was about 10 or so miles into the ride. The Joint Service Open House at Andrews AFB was this past weekend and I’m sure they way a fighter flies, it is not that far! Finally, at about 1.5 miles from home while at a light – where the street goes uphill – I was behind one car when the light changed. When I tried to get going my foot popped out of the pedal. Yikes! I ended up missing the light so I dismounted and walked over to the other side of the street to the crosswalk to make sure I would get across during the next cycle. Unfortunately, once you cross on the other side it is awfully hard to get back to the side of the street I needed to be on. So at this point I altered the route of my return trip and added about an extra mile to the distance. All in all I rode about 14.5 miles.

Once I got home it was time to brick! I went out for about a 25 minute run of 2.25 miles. About a mile or so into my run I came across a white splotch in the street. My first thought was “ooh, a hash run!” Well, funny enough, I had come across someone’s hash course! Because I then found a marking for a true trail and even more flour splotches! It was going the same direction I was, even! Funny, not even two months ago I would have had no idea what it was. I did not continue to follow the trail though as it was not going the way I was! But it sure was funny to see and recognize it! Thanks for the Hash Runs, Team Z! Anyway, by the run it felt pretty warm out to me! But all in all solid workouts for Sunday!

This week I guess I will take it somewhat easy since Columbia is 6 days away. Actually it is less when you factor in the start time! I will not do any running or biking hills this week! My plan for this week – unless something happens – is to do an easy run tonight and Wednesday and an easy bike on Tuesday and probably Thursday… There will be swimming of course Tuesday and Thursday. And Yoga tonight! Saturday will be a short bike and run brick of 30 and 15 minutes.

Happy Training!

Race Report: Kinetic Sprint – relay

RR: Kinetic Sprint – relay

I was looking to do a 5K and was hoping to do the run leg of the Kinetic Sprint. But Coach Ed only had a spot for a biker. Since biking is my ‘weakest link’ I decided it would be a good idea to join the relay and do the bike portion. Ed linked us up through an e-mail. Since I was an older Z I took care of registration and team “The Old and the New” was born. Old, because (1) I am old and (2) I am an old Z’er. New because the two other relay participants were new/fairly new Z’ers. Of course, I wished I had named us “Z Old and Z New” but…I did not.

Anyway, I headed down to Lake Anna early Sunday race morning. I had no idea what Alex looked like and I had only seen Kathleen’s picture online. (Thank you, Facebook!) So after dumping my stuff in the Team Z ‘transition’ area, I started asking around. No luck. I went and checked in at registration and found out Kathleen had checked in and was able to find and meet her. We got closer to the race start time and we still had not met up with Alex! We were worried he was not going to make it so Kathleen offered to do the swim leg. Just about the time she was about to try out a wetsuit, she spotted Alex. So at about 10 minutes before race time our relay was set! Whew!

We did not know how long Alex would take to swim so we watched the relay wave and eventually headed to transition so we would be ready. When Alex came out of the water Kathleen transferred the timing chip to my ankle and I was off. Wow, the relays were in the back and it was a long run to get out…including the run on the gravel portion, ugh. Since I had done the Kinetic Sprint two years ago I remembered that there was a hill out of transition, so I was in the proper gear to get going. Yay! I was off.

Since I was ‘only’ biking I wanted to push as hard as I could through the whole ride. I think I could have done more but I backed off on one hill somewhat towards the end. It was a little crowded there and a race official had just passed, so I got nervous! Oh well. I’ve never had a penalty (knock on wood) and hope I never do.

I really loved the ride. Other than the uphill at the beginning, I did not remember much else from two years ago. Aside from the rain. Well, the uphill was still there, as noted above, but there was definitely no rain!! Except for a little bit of wind it was a great day for riding and I had a great time! I had no idea how much time it would take me as I tend to ride 15 miles per hour. I told Kathleen this and she said she’d be back in transition in an hour. That was a good thing because I finished in 1:02:16. I felt pretty good about that. Alex was in transition too and did the chip transfer to Kathleen’s ankle and she was off. Lucky – the run exit was right by where our relay was in transition! Alex and I headed over towards the Team Z tent and then over to the finish so we could watch other Z’ers come in and of course to see team The Old and The New finish! We again did not know about how much time to allow so we just kept watch. Kathleen soon arrived and our relay was done.

It was a lot of fun, only worrying about one leg. The only other triathlon relay I did was with my son, and he did the run leg while I did the swim/bike.

There were 31 relay teams. Here are our results:

Swim 14 – 18:15
T1: 7 – 00:01:10
Bike: 13 – 01:02:16
T2: 28 – 00:00:32 – I guess we were slow? (I’d kill for that T2 time in an individual event!!)
Run: 20 – 00:31:12
Total: 13 – 01:53:23
The happy finishers!

The Columbia Triathlon...

The Columbia Triathlon is in 16 days!! I know this because today I received an e-mail update from them containing lots of exciting information and links to click on. The swim waves have been published. Again, it is good(?) to be older. I am in the fourth wave, women 45+, after the pros, the elites, the men (55+) and paratriathlets. We go off at 7:00AM! The fifth wave does not start till 7:16AM. Then, finally, my Z-mates, Marlene and Harriet, go in waves 11 (8:04AM) and 12 (8:12AM) respectively.

The huge benefit as I remember from last year was a not-so-crowded bike course, especially in the early hills. Last year, the guys from the next waves caught up to me eventually, maybe halfway through - I cannot remember. Must be because I'm getting 'old'. But it was pretty peaceful out there for a while. So different from past experiences!

Hopefully I will be meeting a few people for dinner the night before to 'carbo load'...there was some talk about it but I'm not sure if it will work out or not. Either way, it will be a fun yet challenging day, I'm sure!

Happy Training!

Hills are my friend…

I say that hills are my friend because Saturday morning I ran the Arlington Science Focus School 5K. Gosh, I feel like I have a long way to go! This is a race that is always on the Team Z calendar as Coach Ed likes to call it one of our ‘grass roots’ events where we give back to the community. A small event of about 250 runners, the school gets to keep the proceeds. There is always a large contingent of Z’ers racing, too. Two years ago I ran this in 27 something. Last year I ran this in 28 something. I guess my main goal was to break 30 minutes in a standalone 5K, and since I recently did this at the Rumpass in Bumpass Sprint (29:43) I thought for sure that would not be a problem. But it almost was! My finish time was about 29:38…maybe 29:39. I don’t know as the results have not been published and I had to leave early. Well, between the heat and the hills that was all I could manage! I guess I have not been doing enough hills…and boy is the Columbia Triathlon - which is just around the corner - hilly. Just 20 days away. Yikes! I will run a few little hills this week. I guess.

And speaking of hills…on Sunday I met Harriet and Jason for a preview ride of the Columbia course. We ended up taking it nice and easy as Harriet was not feeling well. That was fine with me. I figured I would push harder on race day anyway. I have to say, while the hills were definitely there, I feel that my 33 mile ride a week ago Sunday (4 loops of the Prince William Forest Park 'scenic drive' plus the ride to the loop start and back) was much harder! I was ready to quit that after 3 loops! After the ride I changed shoes and helmet for hat and went on my 10 minute jog, including running(?) – as far as I could manage before switching to walking – to the top of the first hill on the run course. Yikes, that was worse the any of the bike hills! I’m as ready as I’m going to be for May 23!

Sunday night I had a really fun dinner with some girl friends. I am already looking forward to our next dinner!

This weekend I am technically ‘off’ on Saturday because of Sunday’s race, the Kinetic Sprint Triathlon. But since I am only doing the bike leg of a relay I am considering running another 5K this Saturday. It is another small local race, benefitting another school, or to be more specific, a group within the school. And my kids went there for Elementary school. So…I might just do that. And this race is a little hilly too. But probably not quite as hilly as this past Saturday! (But I can't quite remember - it has been 6 years since I've done this race!)

Happy training!
