A weekend of seconds…

Friday night was the Colonies Zone Short Course Yards Meet. Even though it was my third time at the Colonies Zone meet, it was my second time swimming the 1000Y. Last year I completed this event in 15:49.48; this year I completed this in 15:45.43! I was so happy! I was worried I would not even finish in the time I’d estimated, 16:00, due to taking several months off at the end of 2009. Now, if I actually DID get in the water three times a week, as opposed to two, I might see even MORE improvement! Anyway, the meet was fun as always. Team Z always makes a big impact. Thanks for being my lap counter, Priscilla! I returned the favor and counted for her and for Tracey right before her. And thanks for counting for me LAST year, Tracey!

On Saturday morning I ran 6 miles, starting at the Team Z meeting point and heading down a neighborhood street (hill) to the
W&OD Bike Trail for a total of 3 miles, then back. The first three were I think at a very slight incline, so the way back was a bit easier. Until I got to the hill to get off the trail. Yikes. I still had a negative split, even with walking up a part of that neighborhood hill. I saw Maggie from Team Z coming and going. I also saw Kai (going) and Andrea and Cady (coming) as well as a few folks from Cancer to 5K. Then I went on my second Hash Run. This one was MUCH harder than my first. I think I was (1) worn out from my pre-run, and (2) the Hash Run was HILLY! OMG!! I was definitely at the end of the group. Thanks to Kate (one of the organizers) for hanging back with this small group to make sure we ended up back where we started. All in all I ran 10.17 miles!

Sunday was a 40 mile scheduled bike ride out of Southern High School in Harwood, Maryland with Team Z. However…since the
Columbia Triathlon is (now) just three weeks and six days away I opted to head back down to Prince William Forest Park for the second time and ride there. I parked in the lower lot and rode to the same place we did the time trial loops (the loop is 7.2 miles long) on April 3 and did almost four complete loops. On the fourth loop instead of turning left at the stop sign to go back to the ‘starting point’ I just turned right and went back to the parking lot. The 2-ish mile ride back was hard. SO. HARD. Total mileage = 33.1. Then I changed into my running shoes, put on my run cap and did my 10 minute / .82 mile run. Note: I met my IMLP riding buddies (Pam, Carol, and Linda) there. I was hoping to ride the entire time with them. Haha – I could not keep up. They rocked and did 6 loops!

Sunday night I tried to again get back on the burpee bandwagon. But I’d had two beers before / during dinner (major shocker) so I only managed to do 14. I guess 14 burpees are better than none. Next time I should plan to do them earlier…or at least before drinking any beer.

This is a recovery week! Tonight I have a 20-40 minute ZONE 1(!) run…if I ‘want’ to. I also have my third Yoga class. No speed work this week, but I am ‘racing’ a 5K on Saturday with Team Z. This will be my third time running this 5K and will be my first stand-alone 5K since the
Blue & Gray 5K. I’m excited! Except this is one darned hilly race on the Custiss Trail. Maybe all these hills lately will be a help…

Fun weekend highlight: Saturday night I went to see the Blue Collar Comedy Show at the Patriot Center with my boys and Jeff. Laughing feels so good!

Race Report: Rumpus in Bumpass – Sprint

Yesterday was the Rumpus in Bumpass Sprint Triathlon. (Last year I swear they called the weekend's events Rumpass in Bumpass.) I have not done a Sprint event in over 2 years. That is, if you don’t count the very casual Independence Day neighborhood event I do almost ever year… My first Team Z tri event was the Kinetic Sprint!

And, not that I’ve worn it a lot, but yesterday marks the first time I really got my long sleeved wetsuit on ‘correctly’ so my shoulders did not get tired during the swim. Pre-race, I got in the water for a short warm up swim. The air temp was so cool that the water actually felt warm.

Swim: 15:38 – Speaking of the swim…that water got a bit choppy! The water was so calm when we got there but wouldn’t you know the wind picked up just as the race got underway. I don’t think it was quite as bad as the Olympic distance race from the day before. I got a good mouthful once when I breathed at the wrong time but did not choke or swallow water. Regardless, I think I swam pretty straight and had no problems sighting at all.

T1: 3:30 – Eh…could be better but could be worse! My last sprint with a wetsuit (the afore mentioned Kinetic) was in May 2008 and it was 4:40 – that seems to be my ‘norm’.

Bike: 45:10 – The bike felt pretty good except for one part near the end where I felt I had no power at all. It was a bit cool out and I opted to not wear my arm warmers. I did not miss them. Somewhere past the middle of the course there was stuffed animal road kill(?). Not quite sure what was up with that but some little kid might be missing his or her stuffed dog. Got passed by a lot of nice Z folk and others. I passed a few people myself. Made it back to transition without issue.

T2: 1:39 – I’ll take it! Much better than ‘normal’. Anything under 2:00 makes me happy. My feet were a bit numb after the bike – between the chilly temps and the shoes – I have not yet put the new inserts and wedges in my new bike shoes. I guess I’d better do that before too long.

Run: 29:43 – I am ecstatic! I have broken 30 minutes in a 5K again and did it during a triathlon. Yay! I was hoping to run a 5K in February but – in case you forgot – we had a little problem with snow. Anyway…possibly due to the shorter bike distance I had none of that wobbly leg feeling once I got moving. I was wearing my new-ish Zoot tri/running shoes. They felt great! This was not the first time I’d worn them but the first time in a race. I ran the entire race with the exception of a super short walk at the water station at the turn around. I had a few sips then got moving again. The coolest thing about this run course is the out and back feature when you get to see a LOT of Z green. Always good for a little cheer! I got to say ‘go Z’ so many times heading out and back. Boy, people who don’t know about Team Z must wonder… The one thing about this run course I do not like is the brief portion at the beginning and end where we run on the root-infested trail. The roots are unreal and I am so glad they mark them!

So…lots of Z cheerleaders and support make any race with Team Z great. I could really hear people yelling for me as I approached the finish. Of course they were there heading out and back in on the bike, too. Then there were the hand slaps. So cool!! Thanks, team!

PS - I got to meet this blogger, who was officiating, before the start! (Love your blog, by the way!)

Next up:

Friday, 4/23 – Colonies Zone 1000 Yard Swim at George Mason University

Saturday, 5/1 – ASFS 5K – A small, local run to support an elementary school in Arlington. This is an event Team Z supports every year. It is run mostly on part of the Custiss (I think) bike trail along Rt. 66. Nice and hilly. It will be good to see how I fare in that 5K after this. If this year is anything like the last two years – it will be hot during the run!

Sunday, 5/9 – Kinetic Sprint – Relay – I am doing the bike leg (must fix and test out the bike shoes before this day). My biking needs the most work so this will be good for me. I’ve now been a Z for a couple of years and two new Zs are doing the swim and run legs. So we are team The Old and The New…but I think I will/should change it to Z Old and Z New before race day.

Time to get my Rumpass on…

Tomorrow is a big day – the first triathlon of the season – the Rumpass in Bumpass! Many of my Team Z-mates are down in Bumpass today for the Olympic distance race. I am doing the Sprint (750 Meter Swim, 12 Mile Bike, 5K Run) tomorrow. Yay!

I’ve put in a lot of run training over the winter and did some indoor spin training and just two outdoor rides. Oh well. Swimming was a lot of twice a week swims for the most part with a few ‘off’ weeks. So seeing as this race is a Sprint I’m sure I’ll survive!

However…this week leading up to the event I did basically nothing training-wise. Stress and other factors have really gotten in the way. I made one swim practice on Tuesday and that was it since last Sunday’s Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. Heck, I did not even do any burpees. And I’m sad to be behind on that. I will pick it up again next week. For those who have kept up with my Facebook status recently, it seems like this ‘landlord’ venture I was going to embark on is not going to be a reality. And that is ok… But now I have some thinking to do.

Back to Rumpass: Tomorrow morning I am meeting Marlene at a Starbucks so we can carpool to the race. We are both doing the Sprint and want to be back around the same time, so this is good. It will be quite nice to have company coming and going. Actually, it would be ‘going and coming’… And this weekend’s races have a ‘late’ start time, as far as any triathlon goes – 10:00 AM! At this early in the season though, with the Lake Anna water temperatures being a chilly 66 degrees currently, the later start time works out. Of course, 66 degrees means wetsuit legal! So, the late start times mean you can almost sleep in – even when traveling down to the race on race day! Yay again!

Back to training: I feel bad for not doing any training this week. I’m not nervous for tomorrow as much as I am for my event on May 23, the Columbia Triathlon, which is getting closer! Next week marks a new training week, and a recovery week, so I am going to hopefully start fresh. And make almost all the workouts. (Almost because I have a massage appointment on Tuesday after work…but maybe I will spin later on at home. Ha.) And add in those burpees. And boot camps (no boot camps on recovery week though)! And hill work (bike and run). And track/speed work. And that third swim a week. And…is there enough time in the week? Yes!

Happy Training!

Race Report: Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run

Sunday was a *perfect* day for a race! Well, it started out perfect. For me it ended up being a bit warm. But all in all, wonderful! But...before the race on Sunday, I had to pick up my packet on Saturday.

Saturday morning I Metro'd in to packet pickup and after an initially long line outside to get in the line moved quickly and I was done in a timely manner. I bought a really cute t-shirt from Pacers at 20% off - it is a girlie blue t with a 26.2 on the front. I then got a cup of coffee and drank it in the little park across the street and watched the cutest squirrel ever being hand fed by three little girls from Indiana. He did not look the snowy winter effected him. At all.

After finishing my coffee I hopped back on Metro to ride up to Greenbelt where my cousin was to pick me up. From there we drove to Baltimore's Inner Harbor to meet her sister, my other cousin, for lunch. We ate at McCormick & Schmick and it was so nice we ate outside by the water. It was a really nice afternoon and the three of us got to catch up. Long over due visit!

My cousin drove me back to the Greenbelt Metro where I took three different colored train lines to get back to my car. It was very uneventful.

Sunday morning I woke up before the alarm. Yay! I was quiet as possible getting up and out so as not to disturb the rest of the house. OF course the cats got up and kept me company until it was time to leave. I got to Metro on time and while riding the train got a text from Carol who had just arrived and was going to scout out of meeting place. I arrived shortly there after and took care of the usual stuff, bag drop, etc. and found her. We did not have long to wait before getting in our Orange corral and then to the start of the race. It is really amazing how many people race with head phones. Even though the rules say not too. I don't like to train with them because I like to hear what is around me. And would never consider racing with them. Oh well. That's all I'll say.

I had worn a technical t-shirt over my running tank and decided to remove it before the start. This was a good thing. I was actually fairly comfortable standing in line. It would have been a big pain to remove it while running - the neck is snug and I have to remove my sunglasses and hat to get the shirt off. Anyway... I did not have a specific goal in mind, but figured I try to beat last years time of 1:39 (or so I though). In any case, beating 1:40 and running under 10 minute miles was a good goal. My Shamrock half goal had been 10:19's so, if I could do this it would be great.

I started off too fast (so what else is new) but felt pretty good for the first half. I just tried to keep going with the people around me. I did not spend time trying to dart around people to improve my position or anything. As I approached each water stop, which I did not need as I carried my own Heed, I slowed to a jog till I got past all the craziness. I felt like I was slowing overall as the race went on, but given that I started quick that made sense. The last two miles were pretty tough! I was trying to keep up with one person in particular, but in the end could not. The last part, the last half mile-ish, has a bit of uphill, boy was that a killer for me. But when I got to where I was really close I managed to pick up the pace anyway. I kept going faster till I crossed the finish line. It was painful at the end and my breathing really hurt. But I lived. I hit stop and my watch said 1:39:18 so I was pretty darned happy - I managed to run under 10's and thought I had gotten about the same time as last year...

I found Carol at the finish - she had a ROCK'n race AND had another PR! Yay Carol! Sadly, I did not have a Diet Coke for her this time. We chatted for a bit before heading out. I got on to Metro quickly and found a seat and part way into my ride was joined by a 10 year old kid traveling with his family back home after Spring Break. He was THE chattiest kid ever and so cool! How refreshing it was so have the conversation that I did. He was so polite - he introduced himself and shook my hand. Then when he left he said it was nice to meet me and thanked me for chatting. (Then he parents thanked me for listening!)

After I got home I looked up my 2009 results, which were 1:42:05. This year it had my finish time at 1:39:16 So I actually bettered last year's time by 2:49! Of course...I am still trying to beat my first year time from 2001 of 1:29:12. Maybe one day...

So...only six days till the Rumpass in Bumpass Sprint!

Happy Training!

Happy Spring!

Spring is here! A lot of fun stuff has happened since my last post:

4/1 marked my official return to Team Z
4/3 I participated in my first bike time trial - 21.6 miles of 3x7.2 mile loops in Prince William Forest Park (first time there) with Team Z, including a 2.5 mile warm-up (to get to the star) and of course we had to go that same 2.5 miles back to the cars; I think this was my first outside ride since September; I followed this with a 10 minute run
4/3 a post TT lunch with my Ironman USA riding buddies (Linda, Pam, and Carol)
4/4 my first hash run with beer; followed by a Bonzai sponsored BBQ – Happy Easter
4/5 post-work run with Es from Team Z – nice social run

I’ve been going to swim practice with Team Z twice a week now. If I could *only* add Sunday nights on my own, then I’d be happy. We’ll see. I do have new fun fins to work with and of course my paddles for pull work. (I must work on this!)

I’ve also been doing Carol’s burpee challenge and am up to 43 burpees. Tonight I need to do 44 of them. The idea is to get to 100 burpees in a day. Once I hit that though I don’t know what I’ll do.

Next week I hope to get back to the workout room twice a week and start lifting. Unless of course I start the Monday morning Z boot camp! Then I’ll only need to lift once a week. Or just go to the Wednesday evening Z boot camp, too. Today after work I hope to get outside on my bike again. Track work starts again on Wednesday, but I may skip it since I have the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in just 5 days. Track work will start next week for me. I can do track workouts Wednesday morning with Team Z, too. Then on Thursday I will do either an easy run or easy ride, as opposed to the bike speed work. Saturday I have packet pickup for Sunday’s race; then I’m meeting my cousins for lunch… Oh, and next Monday, 4/12, I start Yoga! I'm taking a 7 week class on Monday evenings.

Speaking of the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Race, below are the countdown days as of today for that and the rest of my official events for 2010:

Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run-5 days
Rumpass Sprint-12 days
Colonies Zone 1000Y-17 days
ASFS 5K-25 days
Kinetic Sprint (Relay-bike)-33 days
Columbia Oly-47 days
Zooma 10K (Annapolis)-61 days
Reston Oly-159 days
Marine Corps Marathon-208 days
